What is inside
Sodium citrate and separating gel
The anticoagulant keeps the blood liquid through centrifugation, and the gel separates the plasma from the cell fraction. Together they decide what kind of plasma the doctor draws into the syringe.

Sodium citrate
It binds calcium ions reversibly, so the blood does not clot while the tube is in the centrifuge. Clotting is restored by activation when the protocol calls for it.

Separating gel
After centrifugation it forms a barrier between the plasma and the cell fraction. The doctor draws the plasma above the gel, and the cells stay below it.

Glass and vacuum
The glass body is built to come through centrifugation intact. The vacuum draws the 8 ml of blood on its own.

Handling the tube
After the draw the tube is inverted several times to mix the blood with the citrate, without shaking it.
